The Leah Foundations breast cancer awareness month tagged BCAM 23 took place from the first of October to the 31st of Ootober2023
Event Overview
The purpose of the event was to raise awareness on breast cancer in Ilorin metropolis and also on our digital space and to provide free and subsidized breast cancer screening to people in Ilorin
Key Highlights
1. Preparation
The month started off with Massive social media campaigns posted on all official handles and those of the volunteers. Decoration were put in place to reflectr the October theme for breast cancer awareness.
2. Screening Day 1(October 5th)
The turnout was not so impressive. Less than 30 women showed up for screening which prompted a more direct and personalized campaign involving personal contacts, corporate organizations and one on ones with people
3. Interactive session (11th October)
This was an instagram live program hosted by LEAH foundation which addressed the issues surrounding breast cancer – truths and myths with an extensive question and answer session.
4. Screening day 2 (12th October)
The turnout was marginally improved however, engagement increased via calls and messages .
5. Breast Cancer Awareness Walk (18th October)
A 5.3 kilometre breast cancer awareness walk, which commenced at Leah Medical Centre premises in GR A, was embarked opon. The route was through Tanke and axis. It involved singing, chanting and dancing one on one interaction with passersby’s, shop to shop visits and open speeches at the market square.
Awareness about breast cancer, the risk factors, screening and treatment modalities were spoken about.
Notable Speakers
Among Notable Speakers were Her Excellency Dcness Omolewa Ahmed (founder of LEAH Group) through a reported speech. Dr Dare Julius a consultant (Gynaecologist and the Deputy Chair Of NMA Kwara state chapter), Dr Alatise Muhammed (President of the Medical women’s Association), Dr Oyinloye Gregory (Medical Director LEAH Medical Center), Mrs Gaya (A breast and cervical cancer survivor)
Volunteer Reactions
Reaction was impressive with a turnut of hundreds of walker consisting mostly of volunteers and representatives of supporting organization, such as NMA, MWAN Aisha Jalloh Foundation and some cooperate sponsors. The participants were generally positive, with questions asked and answered.
Screening Day 3, 4 & 5(October 19th, 26th and 27th)
There was a massive turn out with a total of about 300 beneficiaries of free breast and cervical screening and … discounted mammograms and …. Discounted breast scans
FLAC Activity(October 30th)
Under the auspices of First Ladies against Cancer, the leah team visited UCH Ibadan for a courtesy call and to make a donation of 10 Million Naira for the treatment of cancer Patients in the hospital, we also
Conclusion
The breast cancer awareness month 2023 was carried out by leah foundation and successfully reached over 1000 people with awareness campaigns on breast and cervical cancer and screened over 400 women. We also provides mammogram and breast scan subsidy to about 120 women
